Here in the greater Alexandria and Fairfax areas, we don’t get too much snow. Still, at Lindsay Mitsubishi of Alexandria we think it’s important that our customers know a little bit about snow tires on new Mitsubishi vehicles.
These should come in handy if we do happen to get more snow than usual, or if you’re headed north for a long vacation and you want to be prepared. In inclement winter weather, snow tires are there to keep you safe behind the wheel, so no matter what, it’s a good idea to know the facts.
First, snow tires are thinner than all-season tires, helping drivers get through the snow and slush. The rubber on snow tires is also different than all-season or summer tires in terms of chemical makeup and density. They are formulated specifically to withstand colder temperatures, and offer a better grip on snowy and icy surfaces.
In addition, snow tires also have different tread. The groves on these winter tires are designed to in a way that helps you maneuver through snow, and uses a smaller tread that gives you a stronger grip, no matter the conditions.
Finally, snow tires have studs. We wouldn’t recommend taking your new Mitsubishi out with these in anything but winter weather, but it does give you another level of traction that keeps you safe.
