Remember our last blog post about the Volkswagen Golf‘s running to be the World Car of the Year? Well the New York Auto Show has come and gone but it’s ok, because our beloved hatchback left with the 2013 World Car of the Year trophy in tow.
We’re particularly excited because the victory marks the second consecutive year that Volkswagen has scored the most prestigious title in the auto industry, as well as the fourth time since 2009. Seems winning just runs in the VW family!
We think the World Car Awards jurors said it best when they noted, “Honed over seven generations since its original launch in 1974, the Volkswagen Golf is as close to the perfect hatchback design as any car company has come yet. Right size, but spacious, practical and comfortable inside, the latest Golf has been brought up to date with a fresh if evolutionary design, a range of new engines, plus an impressive list of equipment and safety features. What’s more, it’s fun to drive. If ever there was a car for everyman, the Golf is it.”1
The 2014 model will offer three engine options and with its reduced weight and more aerodynamic body, it will also have improved fuel-efficiency. The Golf also wows with its major technology advancements, including Lane Assist, which detects and alerts drivers when they drift out of their lane, and Dynamic Light Assist, which prevents blinding oncoming traffic with high beams. However, we won’t be seeing this new Volkswagen in stateside showrooms like ours at Lindsay Volkswagen until 2014.
On the bright side, we do have a current Volkswagen Golf model waiting for you. With a comfortable ride, excellent handling, a lively engine, and confident high-speed performance, what’s not to love? Take a spin in a car crafted by the same auto maker who brought us this year’s World Car of the Year.
