Bike to the Beach is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that promotes biking and uses its annual charity rides to raise money for Autism Speaks. They combine a passion for cycling with fundraising to create a fun and energetic volunteer community, all while promoting mental and physical stimulation.
Bike to the Beach began when a student at Georgetown Prep, Joey Schmitz, missed his ride to Bethany Beach for Beach Week after graduation. His parents refused to let him use their car and, with no other alternative, he called a friend of his and they decided to ride their bikes. They met in DC and biked over 100 miles to the beach. In 2007 he and friends started Bike to the Beach and partnered with Autism Speaks after having family members diagnosed with Autism.
Today the trip includes hundreds of riders meeting at Gonzaga College High School and biking over 100 miles to Dewey Beach, Delaware. Other rides have been founded in NYC, Boston, and Baltimore.
Autism is the 2nd most prevalent developmental disorder in America affecting 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys in the United States. There is no cure, and they do not know exactly what causes it. Autism Speaks both raises money for research as well as helps foster awareness throughout the country.
How is Lindsay Automotive connected you ask?
