In a competition that will include chairs, clothes and piano keys, the Volkswagen XL1 will compete for Design of the Year.

The world’s most fuel-efficient hybrid car, the Volkswagen XL1, has been named the winner of the Transport category in the annual Designs of the Year Awards.

The VW XL1 moves on to the next stage to go head-to-head in competition for Design of the Year 2014. The innovative Xl1 will compete against winners of the other categories, including Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Furniture, Graphics and Product.

The Designs of the Year exhibition honors the best-of-the-best in cutting-edge innovation and original talent, showcasing the very best in global design. This includes not only vehicles, but also clothes, chairs, and even a re-invention of the piano keyboard. All are included in this year’s winners. The car is one of 76 designs in the seven categories which are on display at the Design Museum in London until August 25th.

Conceived by a team led by Klaus Bischoff, head of design for the Volkswagen brand, the XL1 is a limited series production two-seater car that explores the limits of energy efficiency for a road-legal production vehicle. It was nominated for the exhibition by author and automotive design and technology expert, Andrew Nahum.

The design brief for the XL1 was to produce a ‘one litre’ car, i.e. a car that uses one litre of fuel per 100 km, equivalent to 282 miles per gallon. The resulting vehicle uses just 0.9 litres per 100 km, or 313 mpg, and this high mpg figure correlates to a very low carbon dioxide emissions value of just 21 g/km.

With the addition of two exhaust gas inlets and two nozzles, Lexus welcomes its first twin scroll turbo charger to its powertrain family at the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition. The all-new Lexus NX compact crossover offers the brand’s first gasoline turbo engine in the NX 200t. The NX 200t turbo will balance excellent fuel economy with responsive acceleration and agility.

The all-new NX is Lexus’ first entry into the luxury compact crossover segment. The NX 200t turbo will be available in the U.S. market along with the NX 300h hybrid. The availability of NX model range, including the NX 200 with a naturally aspirated engine, will vary by market. “Positioned below the RX, the new NX model will provide an exciting entry point into the Lexus crossover and luxury utility vehicle family. Its expressive design and turbocharged performance embody the technology and design focused direction customers can expect from Lexus,” said Jeff Bracken, Lexus group vice president and general manager.

The NX 200t F SPORT will also be available with aggressive design features. F SPORT exclusives include a mesh grille insert, bold front bumper, machined-finish wheels, black exterior mirrors, interior ornamentation, paddle shifters, and sport seats.

The NX was developed as a refined and stylish compact luxury utility vehicle. NX chief engineer Takeaki Kato said, “Luxury is epitomized by small but important details.” Examples of attention to detail in the NX include welcoming LED illuminated exterior door handles, advanced overhead console touch switches that operate smoothly and other innovations that will set new standards for future Lexus models.

“Apart from the luxury touches, the NX was designed to complement daily life while also being capable of supporting an active lifestyle on the weekend.”  The Lexus NX will go on sale globally in the second half of 2014, and appear in U.S.  showrooms in the fall of 2014. Both U.S. models, NX 200t and NX 300h, will be available in front-wheel-drive and all-weather-drive.

Three Powertrains Globally

1. NX 200t

The NX 200t will use the all-new 2.0-liter turbo direct injection gasoline engine matched to a six-speed automatic transmission specially tuned for the NX. The six-speed automatic transmission features new torque-demand control logic, which calculates required engine torque and maximizes it, delivering quick response to acceleration and exhilarating feel with fuel efficiency.

The new Lexus 2.0-liter turbo engine was tested extensively on various road conditions and harsh environments. The turbo engine has a Lexus-first combination of water-cooled cylinder head integrated exhaust manifold and twin scroll turbo charger.

2. NX 300h

The NX 300h adopts Lexus Hybrid Drive with a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine, generator, motor and battery. Special features of the hybrid model include sprung-weight damping control to increase ride comfort and handling stability by reducing pitching on uneven road surfaces.

Available in front-wheel drive or all-weather drive, the NX 300h will be ready for urban adventure.

3. NX 200

China and Russia will offer the NX 200. A naturally aspirated 2.0-liter Valvematic variable valve mechanism gasoline engine matched to a Sequential-Continuously Variable Transmission (S-CVT)/Multi-drive transmission will power the NX 200.

The Lexus Valvematic system provides high torque through an expanded valve opening angle and Variable Valve Timing (VVT) operation range. The 2.0-liter powerplant has a high compression ratio and diagonal fuel injectors, which optimizes fuel mixture to produce strong power through the rev-range.

Chassis and Suspension

The NX has been designed for agile driving, handling stability, turning posture and ride comfort, including yaw-rate response to steering input and stability on uneven road surfaces.  The foundation for the vehicle’s sophisticated suspension is a highly rigid body with extensive underbody reinforcement. The new body has a comprehensive package of reinforcements, additional bulkheads and spot welding, suspension braces, and the use of Lexus body adhesive, laser-screw welding and high-rigidity glass adhesive. NX F SPORT models will have newly developed performance dampers to further enhance handling stability.

Exterior Design

From inception to reality, the NX was substantially influenced by the LF-NX concept vehicles that were introduced in hybrid form at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, and later at the Tokyo Motor Show, powered by an all-new turbo drivetrain. The NX was designed to provide more agility than an SUV and the versatility needed to navigate urban streets.

The front fascia integrates Lexus’ signature spindle grille, innovative LED headlamps, fog lamps, and daytime running lamps. The new compact crossover embraces a sculpted look with bold front and rear wheel arches that house standard 17-inch and optional 18-inch wheels. The profile is accentuated by a roofline peak set towards the back of the vehicle to create a tight silhouette and provide ample head-room for rear seat occupants

An innovative, Lexus-first door handle with a hidden key barrel and integrated lighting provide the subtle attention to detail that meet the chief engineer’s definition of luxury.

Lexus’ signature ‘L’ shaped combination tail lamps, each with seamless LED lighting, and bodywork that reflects the spindle grille complete the rear design.

Interior Design

Soft interior materials combined with hard metallic surfaces provide NX with a luxurious environment and the structural beauty of a high performance machine. A strong, silver frame defines and surrounds the center instrument panel. Knee pads located at the base of the center stack help support the driver and front passenger when cornering. The Human Machine Interface (HMI) technology continues the impression of an advanced vehicle and is also located at the bottom of the center stack.

Seating played a significant role in the cabin design. A quilted pattern in the seat and varied cushion thickness provide both support and style. The NX possesses a low hip point that helps optimize driver position and adds to the connection between the driver and the vehicle while increasing overall head room.

The NX also has a long cargo area length and a wide front to rear couple distance that helps increase legroom.

Technology

The NX has an array of innovative on-board technology, including an available Lexus-first Wireless Charging Tray which enables Qi compatible phones to be charged. Other available technology includes the first application of a new Lexus Remote Touch Interface with a touch pad; Pre-Collision System with All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control; Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert; power folding rear seat and  Lane Departure Alert. The standard-equipped Multi-information Display features an available Lexus-first G sensor and boost meter.

Look for Lexus NX to be in our showrooms in the second half of 2014.  We would like you to come in and test drive any of our Lexus models. Visit us online at LindsayLexusOfAlexandria.com.

2014-Cadillac-CTS-700x340

Automobile Magazine has added the 2014 Cadillac CTS to its 2014 All-Stars list. Editors of the magazine used a combination of factors to determine this year’s list of 10 All-Stars, including results from their performance testing, feature evaluation and the vehicle’s overall value. All 2014 model year vehicles are considered for the award.

“During our All-Stars evaluation drives, the Cadillac CTS emerged as a clear favorite. Previous generations of the CTS had come close to equaling the performance, styling, and outright desirability of the most highly regarded foreign luxury sports sedans, but not quite,” said Automobile Editor-in-Chief Jean Jennings. “This all-new CTS, on the other hand, actually surpasses many of its competitors from Europe and Japan and, in so doing, is a testament to the complete transformation of Cadillac.”

A Cadillac model has been named as an Automobile Magazine All-Star a total of seven times. Previous models which appeared on the list include the 1993 Seville STS, the 1997 Catera, the 2004 CTS-V, the 2004 and 2005 SRX crossover and the 2011 CTS-V Sport Wagon.

Automobile took their 10 All -Stars, including the 2014 CTS, on a week-long road trip across eight different states. The article on that story can be read here. Being named as an Automobile All-Star is another accolade for the CTS to add to its trophy case after it was previously named the Motor Trend Car of the Year, one of Car and Driver’s 10 Best and Road & Track’s 2013 Luxury Car.

  • Ford investing $500 million to add 300 jobs and upgrade Lima Engine Plant in Lima, Ohio, to support production of the all-new 2.7-liter EcoBoost® engine for the 2015 F-150
  • Latest EcoBoost technology in an all-new lightweight design provides extremely high output coupled with standard truck-optimized Auto Start-Stop
  • 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost delivers the performance of a mid-range V8 with greater efficiency, and builds on strong sales of V6 engine-equipped F-150

Ford Motor Company will invest $500 million to upgrade its Lima Engine Plant and add 300 new jobs to support production of the all-new 2.7-liter EcoBoost® specifically engineered for the next-generation 2015 Ford F-150.

The high-output, twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost with standard Auto Start-Stop features an entirely new design that delivers power and performance in a stronger, smarter package.

This new EcoBoost engine builds on recording-breaking customer demand for F-150 pickups equipped with V6 engines. In fact, 57 percent of new customers in 2014 have opted for either a 3.7-liter V6 or 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost to power their new F-150. Since 2010, retail registrations of light-duty pickups with V6 engines have grown more than 600 percent, with Ford F-150 directly responsible for 91 percent of this growth, according to Ford analysis of Polk retail new vehicle registration data from IHS Automotive.

“Our truck customers have spoken, and we continue to meet their evolving needs by providing another V6 option in the all-new 2015 F-150,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas. “The hardworking team at Lima Engine is thrilled to begin building one of the most technologically advanced engines ever designed for America’s No. 1 truck.”

Ford’s investment in Lima follows an announcement in early March that the company will shift production of Ford F-650/F-750 medium-duty trucks from Mexico to Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake, in the Cleveland area, early next year.

Lima Engine Plant
Lima Engine Plant produces the 3.5-liter and 3.7-liter Duratec® V6 engines for multiple Ford vehicles including Edge and Explorer utilities, as well as the Lincoln MKX crossover, MKT utility and MKZ sedan. The $500 million investment will go to a new flexible engine assembly system and renovation of 700,000 square feet of the facility for machining and assembly functions.

“Lima Engine has kept Ford and Lincoln vehicles running for nearly 60 years,” said Bruce Hettle, Ford vice president, North America manufacturing. “Bringing production of the new 2.7-liter EcoBoost to Lima Engine Plant helps build a solid future both for Ford and the dedicated workers in Ohio.”

Lima Engine Plant, which opened in 1957, employs more than 900 people and is one of the largest employers in Allen County. On March 13, the 3-millionth Duratec V6 was built there, and later this year the 40-millionth engine produced at the plant will roll off the assembly line.

“The new jobs at Lima Engine Plant will be a major boost to the community, and continue F-150’s reputation as one of the most American-made vehicles,” said Jimmy Settles, UAW vice president, National Ford Department. “It’s especially exciting that these jobs will go to support a new technology like the 2.7-liter EcoBoost for the all-new F-150.”

All-new 2.7-liter Ford EcoBoost
The high-output, twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost features a new design that delivers power and performance in a strong and smart package for the 2015 Ford F-150.

Standard Auto Start-Stop technology boosts fuel efficiency and is specially tuned for truck customers. Auto Start-Stop turns the engine off automatically when the vehicle is at a stop – except when towing or in four-wheel-drive mode. The engine quickly restarts once the driver releases the brake.

The materials used to make the new V6 EcoBoost enable its fuel efficiency. The engine uses a compacted graphite iron engine block, the same material used in Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke® turbo-diesel V8. The composite of compacted graphite iron and aluminum saves weight while providing strength where it’s needed most for durability.

All-new 2015 Ford F-150
The all-new 2015 Ford F-150 is tougher, smarter and more capable than ever. It’s completely redesigned – establishing a new standard for full-sized pickups by bringing together improved capability, fuel efficiency and cutting-edge smart vehicle technology.

Using advanced materials – including more high-strength steel than ever in the frame and high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy throughout the body – improves durability while saving as much as 700 pounds, giving truck customers greater towing, payload and fuel efficiency performance.

When it goes on sale late this year, the all-new Ford F-150 will have undergone more than 10 million miles of torture testing to ensure it meets or exceeds Built Ford Tough standards.

Along with the all-new 2.7-liter EcoBoost, the new F-150 will feature a complete lineup of powertrains to let customers tailor the nation’s best-selling truck to their needs. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine returns, an all-new normally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 debuts and there is an improved 5.0-liter V8.

EcoBoost leadership
In the three years since Ford launched the 3.5-liter EcoBoost in F-150, the company has sold more than 2 million EcoBoost-powered vehicles; EcoBoost is now the most recognized fuel-efficient engine among consumers.

Ford sells approximately 100,000 EcoBoost vehicles monthly around the world, equating to roughly one out of five Ford vehicles sold.

EcoBoost has been a resounding hit with truck buyers, delivering V8-like power along with outstanding towing capability and V6 fuel efficiency. Since 2011, Ford has sold more than 450,000 F-150 trucks equipped with EcoBoost. Through the first two months of 2014, the V6 EcoBoost engine has accounted for approximately 46 percent of F-150 sales.
