  • 2015 Ford F-150 has more new Ford technology patents and/or patent applications than any truck in Ford history, offering customers innovative technologies throughout – everything from the tailgate to the front end
  • All-new F-150 boasts more than 100 new Ford patents and/or patent applications, making this vehicle a benchmark for new technologies in Ford’s storied history of truck leadership
  • A Ford-developed heat treatment method for aluminum alloy nearly doubles the strength of the material, helping achieve better dent and ding resistance while reducing weight

From its tailgate step to the LED spotlights found on the side mirrors, the next-generation 2015 Ford F-150’s new features and technologies make it the most patented truck in company history.

“The all-new F-150 is loaded with innovation,” said Alana Strager, Ford program analyst charged with tracking new innovations for the 2015 truck. “Ford engineers filed more than 100 new patents for technologies on this truck as they have worked to redefine the light-duty pickup for the next generation.”

Patents and patent applications abound for state-of-the-art technologies covering new features and breakthroughs that will benefit customers of the all-new 2015 F-150. The scope of these innovations includes every part of the truck – body, exterior, interior, chassis, design, electrical and engine – as well as its manufacturing processes.

Patenting a smarter truck

Examples of Ford’s state-of-the-art technologies on the new 2015 F-150 include segment-exclusive LED spotlights found on the side mirrors, innovative remote tailgate release and smart trailer tow features that make towing easier.

  • Innovative LED side-mirror spotlights allow customers to illuminate the side of the vehicle for tasks from setting up a campsite to changing a tire

  • Remote tailgate release automatically lowers the tailgate with the push of a button on the key fob – a first for a pickup truck

  • Ford’s pioneering tailgate step has been completely reengineered so it fully integrates into the tailgate, making it virtually invisible when not in use. The tailgate drops down into position in one easy motion. The grab handle is now housed inside the tailgate, which keeps the inner surface of the tailgate uniformly flat

  • BoxLink cargo management system includes lockable, die-cast aluminum tie-down cleats, and provides a unique interface to the box for improved flexibility and organization, as well as additional locations for tie-downs. Available segment-first cargo ramps can be stowed on the sides of the pickup box via the BoxLink system and mounted quickly on the tailgate to enable easy loading of ATVs, motorcycles or mowers

Other smart features never offered before on a Ford pickup include 360-degree camera view, integrated loading ramps stowed in the pickup bed, 400-watt power outlets inside the cab and LED headlights.

Patenting toughness

Mounted on an exceptionally strong and well-proven high-strength steel frame, the all-new Ford F-150 incorporates the latest high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloys to form the body and cargo box.

The aluminum is heat-treated using a proprietary method developed by Ford engineers that nearly doubles the strength of the metal. Ford is first in the auto industry to use this methodology.

Additionally, Ford engineers have filed patent applications for spot welding methods, adhesives and hydroforming this first-of-its-kind truck.

“Ford is teaching the world how to build a next-generation truck, and the more than 100 patents filed by the F-150 team for technologies on the 2015 truck further proves these Ford engineers and designers lead the automotive industry in innovation,” said Strager.

Patent filings reflect company’s drive to deliver leading technologies to customers

Dreaming up ideas that benefit drivers is interesting; commercializing those ideas into real product features is when customers take notice.

An indicator of General Motors’ commitment to creating customer-driven innovation can be found in the results of two leading studies – the Patent Board and Clean Energy Patent Growth Index. Together they show that GM is a leader in overall patent filings and those focused on clean energy technology.

gm_patentsGM finished first in overall industry patent filings for the 11th consecutive quarter, according to the Patent Board.

Additionally, GM now leads all companies in total U.S. clean energy patents granted since 2002, according to the Clean Energy Patent Growth Index, a third-party monitor of intellectual property involving clean technologies.

“Patents are an indicator of the potential for the GM enterprise to innovate,” said Jon Lauckner, GM chief technology officer, vice president of Global R&D and president of GM Ventures. “Thriving companies have a track record of creating and commercializing innovation, and we are striving every day to discover technological breakthroughs that create tangible benefits for our customers around the globe.”

Patents by the numbers

During the past year, GM accumulated 1,643 patents, according to the Patent Board study. Patent volume is necessary, but commercialization for customer benefit is most important.

“GM is the only company to have achieved the No. 1 position 11 consecutive times in the Patent Board’s Automotive and Transportation industry ranking,” said Karl R. Wilhelm, chief executive officer of the Patent Board. “GM’s contribution to innovation in its industry has clearly put it ahead of its competitors.”

The Patent Board is the leading independent provider of best practices research tools and metrics for patent analysis and intellectual property investment. The Patent Board tracks and analyzes innovation and patents across 17 industries on a global basis. The Patent Board technology strength ranking is based on each company’s patent portfolio scale, quality and impact.

Prioritizing clean energy

Clean energy patents are growing faster than ever in the United States. With more clean energy patents than any other company, GM is committed to developing and implementing technologies that lessen the environmental impact of vehicle emissions.

GM also led all companies in fuel cell patents granted in 2013 as it has since 2002. Fuel cell technology could enable vehicles to be fueled with renewable hydrogen, a sustainable alternative to the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine.

The Index tracks U.S. patents for solar, wind, hybrid/electric vehicles, fuel cells, hydroelectric, tidal/wave, geothermal, biomass/biofuels and clean, renewable energy.

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray’s all-new 8 speed automatic transmission

GM has been granted more than two dozen patents related to the all-new eight-speed automatic transmission that will be offered in the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray for 2015, enhancing the performance and efficiency of the 2014 North American Car of the Year. Designed and built by GM, the new transmission delivers world-class shift times that rival the best dual-clutch designs.

The GM-designed 8L90 eight-speed is expected to contribute up to 5-percent greater efficiency, when compared to the previous six-speed automatic.

Additional control, in the palm of your hand

In OnStar’s 18-year history, it has received more than 500 patents for vehicle navigation, safety and telematics.

A handful of these patents are incorporated into the OnStar RemoteLink™ mobile app. This app allows users to start, stop, lock, unlock and activate the horn and lights on their vehicle from remote distances. These remote features are now free for five years on properly equipped 2014 and newer GM vehicles.

Users of the app also can access vehicle diagnostic information, such as tire pressure, fuel level and oil life. Drivers also can use RemoteLink to send a destination directly to their vehicle’s navigation system through their smartphone. Once the driver starts the vehicle, directions to the planned destination will begin.

GM’s 2014 model year lineup includes 36 vehicles compatible with the RemoteLink mobile app.

This week, May 12th– May 18th is National Police Week, a time for us to remember all of the American Law Enforcement Officers who have lost their lives during their public service.  National Police Week originated on May 15th, 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation declaring it as Peace Officers Memorial Day, which falls within the week annually.  Now, this week brings together thousands of law enforcement from around the world to participate in a variety of events in Washington, D.C., all of which pay homage to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Lindsay Automotive Group shows its support for its local Police Force at Lindsay Lexus of Alexandria, where there is a satellite office for the Alexandria City Police.  Lindsay is proud to offer this small gesture to the amazing officers that risk their lives to protect us on a daily basis.  Lindsay Automotive Group also had the opportunity to help one incredible officer after he was shot while on duty just over a year ago.  Virginia’s largest auto body repair shop, Lindsay Collision Center, in Springfield, VA, made contributions that led to the restoration of the officer’s beloved 1975 Mercedes by his friends and family.  The officer was thrilled to come home to such a wonderful surprise, and everyone else was just as thrilled to have him home!  Read more about the extraordinary Officer, Peter Laboy, here.

The Lindsay Automotive family would like to remind everyone of the hard work, dedication, and bravery that is exhibited by our local law enforcement.  Please remember to be safe while on the roads.

May is a time for warmer weather, the opening of swimming pools, baseball games, and cookouts.  May is also Military Appreciation Month hosting two holidays, Armed Forces Day on May 17th and Memorial Day on May 26th.  As a reflection of both of these May themes, we decided to have a cookout in honor of our Armed Forces at our Lindsay Cadillac location.  Our General Manager, Tim Robinson (pictured right), manned the grill while our staff took the time to appreciate some of the freedoms provided by the men and women that have dedicated their lives to serving our country. At Lindsay, many of our employees have served, or have family members that serve, so it was nice to come together and share stories over some hamburgers and hotdogs.

Lindsay Automotive Group would like to extend its most sincere gratitude to all who serve in our military forces- past, present, and future.  The sacrifices that these individuals make every day can never be repaid, but that doesn’t mean we all can’t make small gestures in a show of appreciation.  One such gesture is being offered by GM.

From May 1st-June 30th, General Motors is pleased to offer supplier pricing to all Veterans along with Active Duty members, Reserves, and Retirees- including their spouses- of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, National Guard and Coast Guard. In addition, members of USAA are eligible for additional discounts.  We will be offering these discounts at our Lindsay Cadillac and Lindsay Chevrolet locations.  In order to be eligible for these discounts, customers need to register at gmmilitarydiscount.com to indicate their branch of service and status.  Customers will then receive an authorization number to be presented at our dealerships.

In addition to this program, Lindsay Auto Group has also made several donations to the Wounded Warrior Project and continually hires veterans at all of its locations.  With Lindsay Cadillac so close to the Pentagon and Lindsay Chevrolet in close proximity to Ft. Belvoir and Quantico, Lindsay is proud and honored to serve so many of our Armed Forces. Thank you!

Edmunds.com today named the 2014 Cadillac CTS Vsport sedan one of its Top Rated Vehicles. The 2014 Cadillac Escalade was named one of Edmunds.com’s Most Popular Premium Luxury SUVs.

“These recognitions further solidify Cadillac’s continued elevation to the heart of the luxury market,” said Bill Peffer, U.S. vice president of Cadillac sales and service. “It’s gratifying to see the experts and buyers agree that Cadillac offers one of the strongest lineups available on the market.”

The 2014 rear-wheel drive CTS offers three powertrains: A 272-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is standard and EPA-rated at 20/30 mpg city/highway; a 321-hp naturally aspirated V-6 is available as is all-wheel drive. Exclusive to CTS Vsport is the all-new 420-hp 3.6-liter Cadillac Twin-Turbo V-6 engine. The 2014 CTS is also the first Cadillac vehicle to receive the brand’s eight-speed automatic.

“With a contemporary new look, a revised interior and more powerful and fuel-efficient engines, the redesigned 2014 Cadillac CTS is a serious contender in the midsize luxury sedan class,” said Edmunds.com Editor-In-Chief Scott Oldham.

The awards from Edmunds.com join a growing list of accolades for Cadillac. CTS last year was named Motor Trend Car of the Year, one of Car and Driver’s 10 Best and Road & Track’s 2013 Luxury Car. Earlier this month, CTS was named an Automobile Magazine 2014 All-Star.
