Do you have a teen driver in your life who bugs you for a car of their own almost relentlessly? Or, are you looking into cars to purchase all while keeping in mind your teen driver(s) and their safety? Look no further than Lindsay Volkswagen of Dulles . The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently issued a list of the best vehicles for teen drivers including six different Volkswagen models. At Lindsay Automotive, we’re sure you’ll love our selection and have peace of mind when it comes to your loved ones getting behind the wheel. The IIHS conducted this study on teen safety on the road to find safe, stable vehicles that do not tempt teen drivers to drive recklessly.

The Options
Statistics show that 83% of parents buy used vehicles for their teen drivers. The IIHS segmented the list in two:  the Best Options (safest options under $20,000) and the Good Options (safest below $10,000). The Volkswagen vehicles that made the list are as follows:

Why They Qualified
The IIHS looked into a detailed set of considerations while attempting to identify which vehicles qualified for the list of vehicles safest to be operated by teens. You may notice there are no compact cars on this list – that’s due to the fact that larger vehicles handle collisions better than small cars do. Also, none of the standard VW’s listed are tuned up with extraordinary levels of horsepower, as this could lead teens to drive faster or more recklessly. Moreover, each vehicle listed above comes equipped with an electronic stability control (ESC) system, which is a safety feature that senses and recovers from skidding. Each vehicle that made the list met or exceeded safety rating standards.

Safety in Shopping
Keep in mind while searching for a car for your teen that modern vehicles do, in fact, come with advanced safety features that beat out older vehicles; that is why all of the Volkswagen vehicles under the Best Choices list are 2009 or newer. These models all include side air bags and advanced traction control systems that make driving smoother and easier than the Good Choices or older cars. Although teens are more susceptible to driving recklessly and getting in accidents, older vehicles will not protect them against these tendencies as well as newer vehicles do, so buy accordingly.

Regardless of your price range and preferences, this used car list compiled by the IIHS can be a helpful guide to purchasing your teen a safe, reliable, solid car. Lindsay Volkswagen of Dulles is more than happy to help you along the way. Keep us in mind!
